पाशनकुशा एकादशी युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा : हे ध्वनिसूदन ! अब आप कृपा करके यह बताएं कि अश्विन के शुक्लपक्ष में किस नाम की एकादशी होती है और उसका माहात्म्य क्या है ? भगवान बोले श्रीकृष्ण : राजन् ! अश्विन के शुक्लपक्ष में जो एकादशी होती है, वह 'पापंकुशा' के नाम से विख्यात है। वह सभी पापों को हरनेवाली, स्वर्ग और मोक्ष प्रदान करनेवाली, शरीर को निरोग बनानेवाली और सुन्दर स्त्री, धन तथा मित्रीवाली है। यदि अन्य कार्य के मामले में भी मनुष्य केवल एकादशी को उपास कर ले तो उसे कभी यम पूर्णता प्राप्त नहीं होती। राजन् ! एकादशी के दिन उपवास और रात्रि में जागरण करनेवाले मनुष्य अनायास ही दिव्यरुपधारी, चतुर्भुज, गरुड़ की ध्वजा से युक्त, हर से निवास और पीताम्बरधारी होकर भगवान विष्णु के धाम को जाते हैं । राजेन्द्र ! ऐसे पुरुष मातृपक्ष की दस, पितृपक्ष की दस तथा पत्नी के पक्ष की भी दस बातें लिखते हैं। उस दिन संपूर्ण मनोरथ की प्राप्ति के लिए मु वासुदेव का पूजन करना चाहिए। जितेन्द्रिय मुनि चिरकाल तक कठोर तपस्या करके जिस फल को प्राप्त करता है, वह फल उस दिन भगवान गरुड़ध्वज को प्रणाम करने से ही मिल जाता है। जो पुरुष सुवर्ण, तिल, भूमि, गौ, अन्न, जल, जूते और छाते का दान करता है, वह कभी यमराज को नहीं देखता। नृपश्रेष्ठ ! दरिद्र पुरुष को भी चाहिए कि वह स्नान, जप ध्यान आदि करने के बाद यथाशक्ति होम, यज्ञ और दान वगैरह करके अपने प्रत्येक दिन को सफल बनाए। जो घर, स्नान, जप, ध्यान और यज्ञ आदि पुण्यकर्म करनेवाले हैं, उन्हें भयंकर यम शोधन नहीं देखनी । लोक में जो मानव दीर्घायु, धनाढय, कुलीन और निरोग देखे जाते हैं, वे पहले के पुण्यात्मा हैं। पुण्यकर्त्ता पुरुष ऐसे ही देखे जाते हैं। इस विषय में अधिक कहने से क्या लाभ होता है मनुष्य पाप से दुर्गति में होते हैं और धर्म से स्वर्ग में जाते हैं। राजन् ! कर मे जो कुछ पूछा था, उसके अनुसार 'पापांकुशा एकादशी' का माहात्म्य मैंने वर्णन किया। अब और क्या प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं?
